Vesak Day: A Day of Light, Kindness and Peace

Have you ever seen beautiful flowers, glowing lamps or colourful decorations at a temple?

During Vesak Day, many Buddhists around the world remember the Buddha and the lessons he shared. It is a special day that marks the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha.

In Singapore, Vesak Day is also a public holiday. Some families visit temples, offer flowers, light lamps, chant prayers or take part in acts of kindness. For many people, it is a peaceful day of reflection, gratitude and compassion.

Flowers are often offered on Vesak Day. They remind us that life is precious and that every moment should be treasured.

Lights and lamps are also important. They remind us to bring brightness into the world through wisdom, kindness and thoughtful actions.

Some people may also give food, donate to charity or help others on Vesak Day. These simple acts show care and compassion, which are important values in Buddhist teachings.

Even if we do not celebrate Vesak Day ourselves, we can still learn something beautiful from it.

We can speak gently.
We can be kind to others.
We can help someone who needs us.
We can try to bring a little light into someone’s day.

Vesak Day reminds us that kindness does not have to be big or grand. Sometimes, even a small act of care can make the world feel brighter.

Just like a little lamp glowing in the dark, one kind heart can shine a long way.

Did You Know?

The lotus flower is often seen during Vesak Day.
It grows from muddy water but blooms beautifully above the surface.
That is why it can remind us to grow with kindness, wisdom and a peaceful heart.
